Section Information for Fall 2024

This course will examine the history and methods of Art History. We will study how Art History has emerged as a discipline and look at the different approaches that scholars have taken when discussing and analyzing art. In doing so, we will consider the kinds of questions art historians ask, the evidence they use, the assumptions or arguments they employ, the perspectives they embrace. As we read key works in the discipline and discuss them, we will be paying attention not just to what the author says, but how the argument is made. We will also investigate how the historical context of a writer can affect the approach an art historian employs. Through readings and discussion, students will learn about methods like formalism, iconography, social history and semiotics, and how these approaches can be used as tools in looking at art. Students will also learn how different lenses, like gender, race, and globalism have changed Art History as a discipline, and how to use these perspectives in their own work. Students will be expected to complete weekly reading, prepare for and engage in class discussion, present research, and submit written assignments.
