This course follows women’s lives and work over four centuries of American history. It surveys the experiences and outlooks of women from different regions, classes, and ethnic groups. Beginning with the colonial period, the readings (secondary accounts and primary documents) explores changes in women's political, economic, and legal aspirations and conditions. The class also focuses on changes in gender roles and sexual behavior. Yet another focus will be the various female and feminist organizations that emerge from the eighteenth century to the second wave of feminism in the twentieth century.
