Section Information for Spring 2023

Using digital tools and methodologies, this course will examine the invisible histories of the Italian Renaissance, or the histories that don’t often get told. These include the stories of the African gondoliers in Renaissance Venice and the female painters of Bologna, the petty artisans that wove silk and made guns, the nuns of Renaissance Florence, as well as those on the margins of society. To examine these invisible histories, we will not only read traditional historical scholarship, we will look at some cutting-edge digital projects that are bringing these stories to life, including GIS mapping projects, digital editions, and databases. Students will gain a basic familiarity with some of the tools and methodologies of digital history as well as produce research artifacts of their own.
