This course examines the American Revolution as a social, cultural, and political phenomenon that accompanied the War of Independence but one whose ultimate significance remained unsettled for decades after the war was over. The course follows American colonists through the imperial crisis that led to the declaration of independence and war with Britain to the creation of a national republic and efforts to forge a distinctive American identity in the postwar era. Please note that this is not primarily a course in military history.

Recommended Prerequisite: 6 hours of HIST or permission of instructor.
