In HIST 499, students build on their experience in HIST 300 and the skills and knowledge they have developed as history majors to write an original research paper of about 20 pages. This section of HIST 499 will focus on 20th century United States women's history and on the excitement and challenges of finding primary sources in archival collections – which will require spending time at a research center such as GMU’s Special Collections. (Students registering for this section should note that such archives often have limited, daytime and weekday, hours.). In the first few weeks of the semester we will read models of women's history scholarship while students develop a research question and related bibliography of secondary sources. Students will then spend the bulk of the semester doing original primary research in the archives and writing their senior thesis paper. Students will also complete weekly writing assignments, some informal and some formal, and they will regularly share their findings and drafts with classmates.View 3 Other Sections of this Course in this Semester »

Research on specialized historical topic culminating in seminar paper and oral presentation. Synthesis course; students expected to integrate knowledge and skills acquired in Mason Core courses. Notes: Subject determined by instructor. Student may present no more than 3 credits for graduation credit. Must receive passing grade to graduate with BA in history. Offered by History & Art History. Limited to three attempts.
