Section Information for Spring 2027

This course introduces graduate students to the major theories, methodologies, and debates that have shaped the study and writing of history. Rather than concentrating on a particular region or period, the course focuses on historiography: how historians formulate questions, select and interpret evidence, construct arguments and narratives, and explain historical change.

Through close readings of influential twentieth- and twenty-first-century scholarship, we will examine how historical interpretations have developed and changed over time. Particular attention will be given to the influence of other disciplines, the relationship between historical scholarship and its intellectual and political contexts, and the challenges of recovering the experiences of people whose voices are often absent from traditional archives. Students will strengthen their critical reading and historiographical skills while considering how these approaches can inform their own research and writing.
