Section Information for Spring 2026

This course surveys the history of women and gender in the United States since the Revolutionary Era, with emphasis on issues of rights and citizenship, broadly defined. Readings will introduce students to a range of sources and methods historians have employed to interpret women’s lives. We will also discuss how the scholarship on women and gender has developed over time, especially efforts to write the histories of working-class women and women of color. The history of sexuality will also be a theme, especially in our readings on the 20th century. The final project for the course will allow students to pursue an area of particular interest in consultation with the instructor.
