"A Tale of Two Kingdoms: Dai Viet and Champa"
Lecture by Robert DeCaroli
Tuesday, November 2, 2010 2:45 PM to 5:00 PM EDT
S. Dillon Ripley Center
The country that we know as Vietnam was for much of its history two states, with different histories, governance, and cultural practices. We explore these two empires and trace their histories from their origins to the 15th century. Special attention is given to the cultural and artistic creations of these states and how those creations were tied to political power. Exquisite examples of ceramics from Freer and Sackler collections illustrate some of the differences between the two regions and their trade relationships with neighboring countries.
Robert DeCaroli is an associate professor of art history at George Mason University. David P. Rehfuss is president of the Washington Oriental Ceramics Society and a curatorial volunteer in the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery.
