Virginia Women in the Civil War Era

The Prince William County Department of Public Works will host a lecture entitled “A Changing World: Virginia Women in the Civil War Era,” Saturday, March 19, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre, 12229 Bristow Road, Bristow, VA 20136.  The $10 fee includes the lecture and a guided tour of the site.  Children under six are free.  

The lecture, presented by George Mason University Professor Jane Turner Censer, will trace the changes for white and African American women of different ages and backgrounds in Virginia during the Civil War era from the 1850s through Reconstruction. A specialist on the nineteenth-century United States, Censer’s essays and prize winning articles have appeared in numerous journals including the Journal of Southern History, Comparative Studies in Society and History, American Journal of Legal History, Southern Cultures, and American Quarterly.  She will have copies of her published scholarly works for sale after the lecture. 

Brentsville served as the county seat of Prince William County from 1822-1893.  It was the political and social center of the county. The Historic Centre consists of five historic structures and a mile long nature trail on 29 acres of parkland.
