Section Information for Fall 2025

The Gilded age and Progressive era seems much like our own: there was revolutionary technological change, and oligarchs reaping the advantages. Populist politicians competed with organized labor to contest the oligarch’s power. Reformers aimed at new ideas of social justice. Gender roles were in flux: women played an increasingly large role in public life. African Americans forged new avenues of power and influence. Nativists ranted about immigration, while eugenicists worried about birth rates. The subjects we will read about in this course will seem both familiar and strange.
