Saying that something is “etched in stone” is a way of expressing its permanence. In commemorating their wars, Americans have literally etched memories in stone in memorials throughout the United States and especially in the nation’s capital, yet interpretations of past conflicts vary among social groups and have changed dramatically over time. In this course, we will examine how Americans have constructed collective memories of wars past, and how those memories have been expressed in a variety of commemorative practices and media. In the process, students will hone their skills in the methods and techniques of historical research and writing. Students will develop, research, and write an original, analytical paper that relies on primary sources, and they will present their research findings to the class in a required oral presentation. All papers will address some aspect of war and memory in the United States, that is, how individuals, groups, or communities have reflected on their warring past at a particular moment in history.

Research on specialized historical topic culminating in seminar paper and oral presentation. Synthesis course; students expected to integrate knowledge and skills acquired in Mason Core courses. Notes: Subject determined by instructor. Student may present no more than 3 credits for graduation credit. Must receive passing grade to graduate with BA in history. Offered by History & Art History. Limited to three attempts.

Recommended Prerequisite: History majors with 90 credits
