BA in Art History
Irena Dragaš Jansen, 2022

Describe your current area of research and/or your academic interests:
Art history synthesizes into one field of study my various interests: literature, visual arts, history, writing, critical thinking, spirituality, teaching, and helping my community. All my academic and creative projects connect art and art history to its relevance for our life and human experiences. I am especially interested in producing programs that engage the general public. For example, I have done multiple interactive art installations to deal with post-war reconciliation efforts and trauma healing. My recent research involved creating a series of visual essays on the historical and social impact of crocheting. Curating exhibitions and interactive installations is a particular passion and interest of mine.
Why did you choose George Mason to pursue your studies?
I first decided to dip my feet into the art history field by earning a certificate in world art history from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. That is where I first encountered some wonderful George Mason University art history professors. Studying art history at George Mason was the next logical step. I graduated with my second BA, this time in art history, in December of 2022. As a part of the BAM program, I began my MA studies that same Fall 2022 semester. I am scheduled to graduate with my MA degree in December 2024. I am thankful to be here as George Mason is a place of academic excellence with stellar art history professors, a school that welcomes an international and diverse student body, and an institution that encourages its students’ efforts to care for their community.
Are there faculty or staff members who have made a difference thus far during your Mason career?
All the art history professors have been wonderful—both during my BA and MA studies. They welcomed me and my unique life story; they respected my academic interests and choices; they expertly guided and directed my studies; and they championed my writing, projects, and efforts. Their knowledge and expertise are superb. Their care and friendliness are evident. Rather than highlighting a single professor, I would like to spotlight the whole art history department. It is a true gem within the George Mason community.
How do you hope to use your degree and studies in the future?
It is my desire to connect my cross-cultural and war experience with my love of art and education in art history—and continue producing programs which help my community. These will include what I have done thus far: writing, webinars, interactive art installations, small-group work, creating programs for NGOs, trauma healing materials, and volunteering at local and international community outreaches. I am also open to other avenues, which I might not have considered before. My exposure to various practical applications of my art history degree and knowledge through my education here at GMU has been pivotal and inspirational. That is why I am very thankful for my George Mason experience. It has deepened my love of art, educated me about art history, equipped me to better serve my community, and opened my eyes to new and different possibilities of using my degree to further develop our society.
How will the Dean's Challenge scholarship support your studies?
Being the recipient of this generous scholarship does not only provide much needed funds to cover the last semester of my MA studies, but it greatly encourages me in my efforts to serve, transform, and heal my community. The generosity and care that was bestowed upon me through this award will continue to be paid forward—both here in my new USA homeland and worldwide.
