Section Information for Spring 2012The primary goals are to understand the connections between the past and the present and to demonstrate the relevance of the study of History as a tool to assess the implications of the present. In essay assignments, the focus of the student is directed to persons of their own choosing in the historical record who functioned as a cause of change. The actions taken by individuals are isolated and examined as catalysts for the evolution of Western Civilization over time. In terms of technical goals, assignments are geared to develop and hone the skills necessary for the accomplishment of proper analysis, critical reading, and learning the compositional rules of analytical narrative. Ultimately, I hope to transmit to the student the desire to ponder, the habit of contemplation, and intellectual flexibility.
Satisfies the general education requirement in Western civilization/world history.
