A survey of major events and developments in the pre-modern history of East Asia, beginning with mythological and archaeological origins and ending around 1800. The course will focus mainly on China, Japan, and Korea. The class will be lecture-oriented, but students will also be expected to participate in class discussions. Discussions, papers and tests will be based not only on survey information provided in lectures and in the textbook, but also on the reading and interpretation of the secondary materials.
