Section Information for Spring 2012
In this class we will examine the origins, progress, and effects of the Civil War and Reconstruction. We will explore a variety of themes, including the question of southern nationhood during the war; the experience of combat for both armed participants and civilians; the role of slavery in instigating and shaping the war; the growth of the federal government during the war; political and popular opposition to the war in the North and the South; contested memories of the war; and many others. Readings will include both scholarly works and primary sources. The main texts for the course will be James McPherson’s Battle Cry of Freedom and Eric Foner’s Short History of Reconstruction. These works will be supplemented by articles and documents available through the university library’s online databases. Graded assignments may include classroom participation, several brief analysis papers, a research paper based on primary sources, and regular quizzes to test basic understanding of the subject.Tags:
