HIST 499: RS: Senior Seminar in History

HIST 499-001: History of Print Journalism
(Fall 2010)

Section Information for Fall 2010

This section of History 499 takes as its theme the study of journalism and media. Presently this subject elicits enormous attention, but only recently have historians begun to focus seriously on it. Students may write about individual journalists such as Ernie Pyle or publishers such as William Randolph Hearst. They can follow press treatment of events such as Watergate or the murders by Jack the Ripper. The topics are limitless. Students may write their papers on any place and any time, as long as they have the appropriate language skills and historical knowledge. Although the class requires some background reading on the history of the press in order to provide examples of this kind of scholarship, the work essentially focuses on producing and perfecting a paper between 20 and 25 pages, based at least partially on primary sources. Students will also serve as a community to critique each other's papers formally and informally.
