Section Information for Spring 2011

This seminar focuses on the broad topic of the life and times of Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826). Students are required to write a major research paper (20-25 pages) based on primary sources from this period and on secondary sources written by historians. Please note that students are not necessarily expected to write their papers on Jefferson, but rather that they will be free to choose any viable research topic pertaining to the late colonial, revolutionary, or early republican era. In this seminar, students will develop and refine the skills required to select a research topic, conduct historical research, and write engaging analytical history. There will be relatively little assigned reading. Students will instead work independently and with the instructor to define their topic and do their research, and then to organize, write, and revise the final paper.
