This course examines some of the differences between academic history and popular history, and explores some of the most important developments in the historical craft during the past century. We will examine the notion of objectivity; the ways historians analyze and interpret their sources, and different ways of writing about and understanding the past. The written assignments will include two short academic book reviews and a longer final paper.

Methodology of the historian including techniques of research, use of documentation and other sources, development of bibliography, and synthesis of material. May not be repeated for credit.

Enrollment limited to students with a class of Advanced to Candidacy, Graduate, Junior Plus, Non-Degree or Senior Plus.

Enrollment is limited to Graduate, Non-Degree or Undergraduate level students.

Students in a Non-Degree Undergraduate degree may not enroll.
