This is a graduate readings course on the American South from the end of the Civil War to the end of the 20th century. Major topics include the reconstruction of white supremacy and establishment of segregation, efforts to industrialize and modernize the South, the role of the South in American culture and politics, the origins and progress of labor and civil rights movements, and the post-World War II development of the Sunbelt. Throughout the course, we will employ gender as a category of analysis along with region, race, and class. This course fulfills the “1861-1914” or the “1914 to the Present” distribution requirement in U.S. history, but not both.
