Section Information for Spring 2012

This course presents the Visual Arts in history and the present, introducing a broad, connective impression of how art affirms, represents and expresses the human condition. We will explore the central role of art in life, the origin of creativity and aesthetics. Reading and lectures will cover the major periods of art history and diverse cultures, through two-dimensional media, such as drawing, painting and photography, as well as sculpture, architecture, decorative arts and new media. The class will demonstrate how to interpret art, applying the elements of art and the design principles of art, as students gain a familiarity and understanding of artistic intention and develop their own viewer responses. Students will learn to write about and interpret art through short writing assignments. In the end, we will see that art is not only the product of the artist, its patrons and the society which produces it, but a larger, more universal expression of existence. This class will fulfill a general requirement (University General Education Fine Arts) or is a good preparation for higher level Art History classes.
