This course will focus on the art of ancient Egypt. Topics to be investigated may include materials and methods of construction, form, function, and meaning in architecture; the placement and role of writing within Egyptian art; expression of religious/political concepts in art; status of women in Egyptian society; evidence for daily life; the early Greek response to ancient Egypt, as evidenced particularly in the Histories of Herodotus; cult activity and temple building in the Ptolemaic and Roman periods; and the historical development of Egyptology following the Napoleonic expedition of 1798. Course requirements may include tests, short papers on reading assignments, class participation and in-class presentations, a research paper, and independent museum visits. Instructor: Prof. Mason
