This course will explore all aspects of curating an exhibition. Students will choose their own individualized theme, write and workshop an exhibition proposal, create an exhibition checklist, research insurance and loan costs, locate lenders, propose sources of funding, select exhibition venues, design layout, lighting, and wall color, write wall text, create marketing materials, and plan educational programs. This course will differ from the typical seminar in that it will explore the practical side of curatorial work in addition to scholarly research. Students should come into the course with a preliminary idea for an exhibition that could become a semester-long project.
