Section Information for Spring 2014

This seminar explores the plantation, the iconic image of early Virginia. We will investigate the material reality of eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century plantation life, for both men and women in the elite planter class as well as those who were enslaved. This will include study of the material culture of the colonial and early republican periods, from fashionable furniture to slave cabins. A key component of the course will be trips to local sites including Mount Vernon, Gunston Hall, Monticello, and Montpelier. In addition course time will include guest lectures and discussions with curators from those institutions. We will question museums’ decisions about what to preserve and how to interpret the lives of masters, mistresses, and slaves to the general public. Readings will come from a variety of disciplines including decorative arts scholarship, history, art history, architectural history, historical archaeology, and folklore. Students will be asked to undertake a research paper that analyzes museum interpretation using scholarly approaches and their own experiences as visitors.

ARTH 699 001 will meet at Smithsonian Ripley Center 3031.
