Section Information for Fall 2011

This class in pre-Columbian art will focus primarily on two centers, in Peru and in Mesoamerica, a region that includes Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras. You will encounter the visual power of Machu Picchu, the Nazca lines, the giant Olmec heads, the sun and moon pyramids at Teotihuacan, the Maya palace of Palenque, and the magnificent Aztec city on an island, Tenochtitlan. Learn about the dynamic and sophisticated people who created these works of art, so distant in time and space from our own cultural setting.
