This course is designed to introduce students to the social, political, economic, and cultural history of Africa from the earliest times to the nineteenth century. From the recent creation of the state of South Sudan to the continuation of warfare in the eastern Congo, it can appear as if contemporary Africa is home to constant political and social upheaval. In this survey of African history, students will examine the historical background to more recent events on the continent. Students will gain an overview of some of the most significant developments in the African past, including early state building, the growing influence of Islam and Christianity, and the impact of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, as well as how these developments have shaped current debates over identity and economic underdevelopment. Pre-colonial Africa will be presented as a continent long at the crossroads of global interactions.

Focuses on the sub-Saharan region and examines evolving systems of kinship power, spirituality, and slavery. Explores the interactions between Africans and global influences from the religions of the book and colonialism to the politics of development and continuities and changes in production. HIST 261 surveys African history from the earliest times to 1800. HIST 262 surveys African history from 1800 to the present. Offered by History & Art History. Limited to three attempts.
