Section Information for Spring 2014

In this course we will explore the Vietnam War in the international context of the Cold War and decolonization, as well as in the context of the national histories of Vietnam and the United States.  Along with the causes and course of the war, and the diplomatic failures and successes which instigated, prolonged, and concluded it, we will examine the conflict’s lasting impact on Vietnam and the United States, including the bitter divisions it created in American society, its contested memory there, and its long-term effects on America’s foreign policy and reputation among the international community.  The readings for the course may include, depending on availability, a survey textbook (George Herring’s America’s Longest War) and two collections of primary sources (Milton Bates’s Reporting Vietnam and Bernard Edelman’s Dear America), along with other primary sources and scholarly articles available online or through the university library.  Assignments will likely include several short papers and one long research paper as well as regular attendance and participation in classroom discussions.
