Section Information for Fall 2024
Black and Jewish Americans have historically worked closely together to produce social change and artistic genius. Their contributions are visible in almost all aspects of American politics and culture. But their relationship has also had conflicting perspectives and misunderstandings. This course tackles the multilayered history of two dynamic and sometimes overlapping groups and their encounters with each other in America. Through studying their histories of shared struggle against racism and antisemitism, we will take an interdisciplinary approach to analyzing the Black-Jewish relationship in America. Using pop culture, historical texts, film, art, literature, and dialogue with guest speakers, students will develop a more nuanced understanding of the Black-Jewish relationship and its complexities today.
