“Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona. Not all holes, or games, are created equal." George Will (the author of this quote) and generations of journalists and academics have argued that baseball is somehow unique - uniquely erudite, uniquly important, and uniquely relevant to understanding American Culture. Is this sentiment accurate? This semester as we examine baseball's history we will find out. Baseball, despite what some will say, does not contain all the answers, but it is a useful portal by which to consider American society and history.
