Section Information for Spring 2026

How did the Soviet Union go from ultimate victory in World War II to collapse in less than half a century? What was it like to live in what was called “late socialism” in the Soviet Union? How did people stand up and oppose an authoritarian regime? How did a non-market, non-private property economy work? What did the Cold War look like from the Soviet side? How did efforts to reform bring about instead collapse? This course will engage with a wealth of new scholarship to explore answers to these and other questions about the Soviet regime.
