Sheila ffolliott to Retire

It is hard to believe that the Art History Program will have to function without Sheila ffolliott. But she will retire at the end of this year after more than 30 years of teaching, research, and service at Mason.

ffolliott began teaching at Mason in 1978 when the Art History Program and Mason were so new the program had to be housed in the offices of a nearby high school. Since that time, she has been instrumental in doubling the number of professors, guiding students through internships, and offering decades of teaching on the Renaissance. In so doing, she has helped shape the program into what it is today.

Just between the years 1991 and 2008, ffolliott taught more than 150 unique course sections and instructed more than 2,500 students. Over the years, students have benefitted from and been captivated by the insights of her research on Renaissance queenship, portraiture and patronage, and the international nature of court life, and more broadly by her contributions to the burgeoning field of feminist studies in the Renaissance.

We have benefitted in innumerable and profound ways by her time at Mason, and we wish her all the best in her future endeavors.
