How to Register for Courses

GMU graduate students are eligible to participate in coursework at local partner institutions under the Consortium of Universities cross registration initiative. For the full info sheet, please see the pdf in the right content block.


Registration Policies for PhD Students

A.P 6.2 Full time and Half Time Classification: All full time PhD students must maintain active course registration in at least 6 credits per semester for graduate assistants (both research and teaching assistants) and 9 credits per semester for non graduate assistants. 

AP 6.10.6 Dissertation Registration: *Students who have already advanced to candidacy and completed the minimum of 15 credits of 999 may sign up for as little as one credit of HIST 999 and submit a part time/full time equivalency form to be counted as a full time student. (Note that the same form allows part time dissertation students to claim part-time status as well). 

 


 

Graduate Research Assistants (GRAs), Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs), and Graduate Lecturers (GL's) are required to register for a full time course load every year

prior to receiving an employment contract offer: 

for the fall semester no later than the first week of August and

for the spring semester no later than the first week of January.  

 

Failure to register on time will result in late registration fees.

*Registering on the first day of classes is considered late registration

for all students regardless of GA or fulltime/part time status. 


 

How to Register for Courses

General registration

Controlled/restricted registration

Send your G number and reason for registering to the contact person listed on the “Restrictions” tab on the Schedule of Classes “Class Details” link.

Once you have a registration override, students can register themselves as normal. See link above.

Individual Section Registration

Complete an individual section request form (linked in the right content block).

 

Have the faculty member sign the form and send it to the graduate coordinator via email.

HIST 798 Directing Research & Writing

In order to register for HIST 998 or HIST 999, 

Complete an individual section request form (linked in the right content block).

Email the completed form to the Graduate Coordinator and courtesy copy your advisor on the email.
