U.S. History: Navassa Island and the guano empire (yes, those are things). Broad interests include the long nineteenth-century; expansion and empire; national security.

Brian is a Ph.D. candidate in U.S. History focusing on the nineteenth-century. His dissertation will investigate Navassa, an American guano island in the Caribbean. The project will seek to explore how the island's isolation - physical, legal, and psychological - contributed to abusive conditions, murder, and multiple U.S. Navy landings to restore and maintain order.
