News Briefs

The beginning of 2019 saw the addition of a new face to the Art History Program staff: Visual Resources Curator Stephanie Sheridan. Sheridan comes to Mason with an MA in art history from the University of Sussex, United Kingdom, and has been managing the department’s social media presence and working on projects to support faculty research and instruction.

Professors Angela Ho and Lisa Passaglia Bauman each delivered a lecture series for the Smithsonian Associates this year. Ho educated audiences on the artistic and cultural innovations of northern Europe from the 14th to 16th centuries in talks that included “Realism and Symbolism in the Northern Renaissance” and “All Too Human: Sin, Folly, and Everyday Life.” Bauman delivered three all-day seminars derived from her introductory-level courses, including “Learning to Look at Western Architecture,” “Stories and Symbols in Art,” and “Visual Literacy: The Art of Seeing.”

Professor Michele Greet received an honorable mention for the Best Book in Latin American Visual Culture Studies for Transatlantic Encounters in 2019. The book, Greet’s second monograph, was featured in last year’s newsletter.

Professors Lisa Passaglia Bauman and Christopher Gregg received a Global Education Program Development Grant and a Term Faculty Development Grant to fund a research trip to Italy to develop a new study-abroad program. Over spring break, they will travel to Rome and Florence, where they will work to synthesize their individual study-abroad experiences into a four-week art history program, Art and Memory in Italy from Antiquity to the Modern Era, which will launch in summer 2021.
