Why did you choose history as a major?

I chose history as a major because I have always been interested in learning about past peoples, places, and societies. Learning about different societies, communities, and cultures has led to impactful discoveries about my individual identity and the identities of the people around me. These discoveries, and the knowledge I gained as a student of history, have helped me navigate the world around me, while also allowing me to pursue a fruitful career in education.

What was your career path after graduation?

After my graduation from George Mason University, I pursued a career working in higher education so that I could continue to impact my community, while also utilizing the communication, interpersonal, and writing skills I developed as a history major. Shortly after graduation I moved to Raleigh, North Carolina and applied to be the Executive Assistant to the Dean of the College of Education at NC State University. I just recently celebrated my 16-month anniversary in that position and I am very satisfied in my career choice. I interact with a diverse pool of students, professors, and high-ranking University administrators every day, and I feel lucky to be a part of this community.

How do you think being a history major at Mason prepared you for your career?

Being a history major at Mason prepared me for my career in higher education because I learned how to communicate in all forums and with people from all walks of life. I learned how to write and think analytically as a history major at Mason, and I learned how to advocate for myself and my ideas and beliefs through my writing and communication. I am also not afraid to learn new things and I understand the importance of being a lifelong learner.

Any advice to give to current Mason students?

Ask questions, be curious, and take advantage of your advisors’, professors’, and mentors’ knowledge and experience. In other words, learn from their history and use that knowledge to pursue your passions, dreams, and personal goals.
