Faculty News - Professor Heather McGuire
Also joining the Mason Art History faculty last fall was Professor Heather McGuire, who teaches the History of Western Art II and Art Now. Her scholarship focuses on 20th-century art in the United States, specifically on art that engages the interplay of words and images.
She received her PhD from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2010. Her study of John Baldessari's Blasted Allegories reveals new findings relating to cultural and critical theories that Baldessari appropriated and embedded as structuring elements in his colorful series of hand-inscribed photographs. She is currently revising this study for publication.
Professor McGuire has presented research papers at conferences and symposia, such as “Playing Systems and Meaning: Soliciting Heteroglossia” at the Southeastern College Art Association Conference. In addition, she has curated numerous gallery exhibitions and worked as a curatorial assistant at the Hishhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
