History
Clarke is a part-time doctoral student. Upon graduation from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service he was commissioned in the U.S. Army. During his military career he was stationed in Italy, Japan, and Germany – as well as deploying to several less hospitable locales. While in the service, Clarke earned his MA in national security affairs with a concentration in East Asia/Pacific regional studies at the Naval Postgraduate School, and graduated from Japan's National Institute for Defense Studies (U.S. National War College equivalent).
Clarke focuses on the history of modern Japan, U.S. foreign relations, and military history. His current research interests include comparative interwar period civil-military relations in Japan and the United States, and pre-WWII U.S.-Japan diplomatic history. After completing his PhD, Clarke intends to work in the public history field with the federal government.
